Building a Loyal Client Book as a Dog Groomer

A full book of regulars makes a commission week predictable. Here is how groomers build one and keep it.

The groomers with the steadiest commission income are rarely the fastest. They are the ones with a book full of regular clients who rebook on schedule, arrive with coats in good shape and tip well because they trust the person holding the clippers.

Why regulars matter so much

  • Predictable weeks. A dog that comes every six weeks is income you can plan around.
  • Faster grooms. A coat kept on schedule takes less time than one that has grown out or matted.
  • Easier dogs. Dogs that know you are calmer, safer and quicker to groom.
  • Better tips. Owners who trust you tend to tip more consistently.

Rebook before they leave

The single most effective habit is booking the next appointment at pickup. Suggest a date based on the coat: "To keep this length, I'd like to see her in five weeks." Owners who leave without a date often come back late, with more coat to deal with.

Remember the dog, and the owner

Keep notes on every dog: the cut, blade lengths, behavior, health issues and what the owner liked or did not. A client who hears "same as last time, with the ears a little shorter like you asked" feels known. Many salon booking systems have a notes field. Use it every time.

Be honest about the coat

Telling an owner their dog is matted is uncomfortable, but clients usually respect a clear explanation with a plan: a shorter cut now, a brushing routine at home and a shorter rebooking interval. Showing them the right brush and comb takes two minutes and saves you time on every future groom.

Make it easy to come back

  • Send reminders a few days before each appointment, if your salon allows it.
  • Keep a waitlist for last minute openings.
  • Offer a regular slot, such as every sixth Tuesday at nine.
  • Post photos of finished grooms, with the owner's permission, so new clients can find you.

If you change salons

Many groomers find that clients follow them when they move. Before you plan on that, read your current agreement. Some include a non solicitation or non compete clause that limits contacting clients after you leave. Rules on how enforceable these are vary by state, so get advice if it matters to your plans.

Track the result

As your book grows, your weekly totals should become steadier. Logging each week in the commission calculator shows the trend, and Pro adds month and year totals so you can see it over time.
